Pigmentation
Uneven skin tone is one of the most common concerns we see - and one of the most responsive to the right approach.
Understanding pigmentation
Pigmentation refers to areas of uneven colour in the skin - darker patches, spots, or diffuse discolouration that sit outside the skin's natural tone. It is extremely common and can affect people across all skin types and ages.
In South Australia, sun exposure is the dominant driver for most clients. Years of UV accumulation gradually alter the cells responsible for producing pigment, resulting in spots and uneven tone that become more apparent from the 30s onward.
Not all pigmentation is the same. The depth at which it sits in the skin, what triggered it, and how long it has been present all determine how it responds to treatment. A clinical assessment matters before any treatment begins.
SPF 50+ daily is non-negotiable for any pigmentation management plan.
Signs to be aware of
Different forms of pigmentation
Sun Damage and Photoageing
The most common form in an Australian context. Cumulative UV exposure causes melanocytes to become overactive, resulting in sunspots, freckling, and diffuse unevenness across the face, hands, and decolletage.
Melasma
A hormonally influenced pigmentation presenting as symmetrical patches - typically on the cheeks, upper lip, forehead, and chin. Can be triggered or worsened by pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and sun exposure. Sits deeper and requires a more sustained approach.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Discolouration that develops following inflammation - acne, a wound, or skin trauma. As the skin heals, it can overproduce melanin in the affected area, leaving a darker mark. More common in medium to deeper skin tones.
The depth at which pigmentation sits significantly influences how it responds to treatment. Epidermal pigmentation generally responds well. Dermal pigmentation requires a longer, more considered approach.
